What is Massage?

Massage can be defined as the systematic and scientific manipulation of the soft tissues of the body for the purpose of obtaining or maintaining health. There are over 75 different types of massage and bodywork. Some of the immediate benefits of massage are reduction of stress, enhanced blood circulation, decreased pain, better sleep, reduction of swelling, enhanced relaxation, and increased oxygen capacity of the blood. Massage is a viable form of adjunct therapy and above all is a professional field of employment. Massage therapists are required to attend at least 500 hours of classes that include Anatomy and Physiology, Health and Hygiene, Technique, and Business Ethics. We are also required to serve an internship and apply for the state board exam that includes a written and practical exam. We are unable to practice without a license from the state in which we reside. If your therapist does not have their state board license and renewal card displayed, ask to see it. Those who take pride in their practice will show it proudly.

What Massage Is NOT

Massage is NOT a sexually oriented service. For the uneducated, massage may bring to mind pictures of a back room massage parlor where massage is performed in an erotic sense. This is NOT what massage is. This is a misnomer that has caused extreme embarrassment and legal trouble to those seeking those types of services from a professional massage therapist. No sexual behavior will be tolerated and it will be reported to the proper agencies. We do understand that the human body reacts in natural ways to human touch, it is up to you to control any such reactions in order to maintain a working relationship with your therapist. If you are at anytime uncomfortable, please let your therapist know. Likewise, your therapist has a plan in place for any improper remarks or physical actions. For optimum enjoyment, the relationship between client and therapist must include trust. If the trust barrier is broken, you will be asked not to come back and the proper report will be filed.
